Driveways + Distancing 2020

During the 2020 lockdown in NSW, I came across this idea from a photographer in the NT and some in the US. Photographers were visiting families at their homes, in their driveways, and taking a family portrait. These photos reminded me of the types of family portraits we used to have, before the likes of PixiFoto, before the very cliché 1980’s and 1990’s posed or staged photoshoots in coordinated outfits and well before selfies.

So I set out with a long lens to do the same for families in my local area, however, there was one thing I didn’t tell them until after I took it - I wanted to do it free. For some, this year has been a hugely difficult year, mentally and financially. This was my small way to spread joy and positivity, and remind people of the beauty that exists in their everyday lives at home in an otherwise uncertain time.

Some, like the family pictured here, welcomed new additions to their crew and didn’t get the chance to do their usual newborn session like they did for their firstborn. The image used for the banner on this page was this family’s first photo together as a family of four.

Photography is both a skill and a gift, and it was my honour to share that with over 100 families.
